A Letter from a Former Student:
How are you Mrs. Perisich. I am not sure if you remember me or not but I was a previous student of yours and was one of the young adults who had received his G.E.D. while with you. I was wanting to say thank you for all that you and every one else had done for me those months I was with you. I did go on to do a little bit of College, though I got over whelmed and took some time off. I am currently getting into Job Corps While I have the chance and while doing some paper work I had to get my print out of my Select Service proof of registering, and I could not help but think of you, and all the other workers that had helped me get not only my education but also helped me with my confidence. I currently am residing in Nampa, Idaho and am thinking of the Wolf Creek Job Corps site. I deeply thank you for all the help you have given me in the past because it has been helping me ever since. My social skills have also improved. I hope you are able to continue to assist in helping youth reach not only their goals, but also help them set up for education, careers and most importantly life.
P.S. see even my spelling has improved since I first walked into your doors. 🙂
I dropped out of high school in 2010 because I did not like the pressure I felt in school. I grew up in Seattle where it was hard to learn anything, because I was often ignored for kids with higher needs. It was also really distracting when other students would be messing around and getting me off focus. My mom died of cancer when I was 11 years old, so it was my aunt who referred me to Yoop!. My dad and I live at my grandparents’ home on Rex Hill [Newberg], because that is where we can afford to live. We also help my grandparents out by taking care of their land. At Yoop! I was able to take my time working towards my GED. I did not rush. Math was what I struggled with the most. The first time I took the GED test I passed all subjects except for math. I took the math test three times and failed each one. I did not give up. I kept coming to Yoop! every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. With the help of Charlie and Khanacademy.org, I passed the math test my fourth time. Khanacademy.org was a great place to study math. The videos really helped me. Now I am working towards my driver’s permit. After that I want to try for an Internship at Goodwill. Eventually, I would like to attend college for welding, like my mother.
